Connect Haas Classic Control (pre-2017)

Classic Haas controls share data over RS-232 with Q-commands when Setting 143 is present on the I/O page; a serial-to-Ethernet server such as a Moxa NPort puts them on the network. If Setting 143 is absent, the machine cannot share data and is connected through discrete I/O.

Software versions

  • Classic control = machines before 2017 (RS-232 settings on the I/O page)

Data you can read

  • Q-commands: Q100 serial number, Q101 software version, Q102 model, Q104 mode, Q200 total tool changes, Q201 tool in use, Q300 power-on time, Q301 motion time, Q303 last cycle time, Q304 previous cycle time, Q402 M30 parts counter #1, Q403 M30 parts counter #2, Q500 program, status and parts in one reply, Q600 macro variable read

Setting it up

  1. Check Setting 143On the I/O page; if absent, use I/O.
  2. Set serialSetting 11 baud 38400, 12 parity, 13 stop bit 1, 14 XON/XOFF, 37 data bits. Sources differ on parity (EVEN vs NONE) and data bits (7 vs 8): match what your control accepts.
  3. Serial serverTCP server mode, local port 4001, FIFO on, limit connections.

Troubleshooting

Traps to avoid

  • Change the serial server's default password.
