Connect SINUMERIK 840D powerline (pl)
SINUMERIK 840D powerline has no native OPC UA server, and the NCU has no Ethernet. Data is reached through the MPI or PROFIBUS port: Softing uaGate 840D with a NETLink S7-Compact adapter (840D pl from software V5.3), IBH Link S7++ in front of IBH Link UA, or a PROFIBUS/MPI gateway feeding the PLC. MTConnect adapters work where an HMI-Advanced PCU is present.
At a glance
| Native OPC UA | No |
|---|---|
| Ethernet on NCU | No |
| Access | MPI (187.5 kbit/s) or PROFIBUS-DP (up to 12 Mbit/s) |
| Gateway | uaGate 840D + NETLink; IBH Link S7++; Helmholz MPI/PROFIBUS gateway |
| Limits (IBH) | About 5 NCK + 2 PLC connections, HMI uses one |
Connection paths
uaGate 840D with NETLink S7-Compact (GPA-CS-041000), or IBH Link S7++ → IBH Link UA.
MTConnect adapter on the PCU (Memex MERLIN) with the OA runtime licence.
Function block GET copies NC values into a data block that any PLC gateway can read.

Software versions
- uaGate 840D: 840D pl from software V5.3
Data you can read
- NC: axis positions and load, spindle speed/load/override, feed, mode, program/block, part count, tool, alarms (through the adapter or gateway)
- PLC data through the S7 symbols
Setting it up
- Identify the HMIPCU 50 with HMI-Advanced allows an MTConnect adapter; an MMC103 does not.
- Choose the busMPI or PROFIBUS-DP access point on the NCU/PLC; check free connections (the HMI already uses one).
- Install the gatewayConnect NETLink (Softing) or IBH Link S7++ to the bus, then the OPC UA side to the plant network.
- Generate symbolsUse the NCVar Selector to select NC variables; import PLC symbols from STEP 7.
- Test read ratesMPI is slow: read a small set of values and increase only if the cycle holds.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Gateway cannot open a connection | All MPI connection resources used | Free one (HMI, PG) or reduce the number of logical connections in the gateway. |
| Values update slowly | MPI bandwidth | Read fewer items or move to PROFIBUS-DP. |
Traps to avoid
- Every gateway connection consumes one of the few NCK/PLC communication resources.
- PCU 50 HMI-Advanced OPC DA is discontinued.

Questions engineers ask
Does 840D powerline support OPC UA?
Not natively. Use an S7 gateway on MPI or PROFIBUS that serves OPC UA, such as Softing uaGate 840D with NETLink or IBH Link UA with IBH Link S7++.
