Matrikon OPC UA Explorer is a Windows OPC UA test client from the Matrikon line, now part of Honeywell. It browses and reads servers in the same role as UaExpert, and you will meet it mainly on sites that already standardised on Matrikon tunnelling and OPC Classic migration products.
What you actually use it for
- Working on a site that already uses Matrikon tooling, where adding another vendor's client is an approval problem.
- Browsing and reading a server as a second opinion when a primary client reports something you do not believe.
- Checking an OPC Classic to OPC UA migration where the server side is a Matrikon tunneller or wrapper and you want the matching client.
- Confirming endpoint and security-policy advertisement independently of the client that is failing.
Walkthrough
- Confirm it is still available before you plan around itThe Matrikon product line moved under Honeywell and free tooling has been repackaged over the years. Establish current availability, cost and download route with the vendor first, because this is the field most likely to have changed since anything you read about it.
- Connect with no security to prove the routeEnter the endpoint URL and connect anonymously with security None. As with any client, this separates a network or endpoint-path fault from a certificate or policy fault.
- Add security and complete the certificate exchangeOn a signed and encrypted endpoint, expect the first attempt to fail on trust. Trust the server certificate in the client, then move the client's application instance certificate from the server's rejected store into its trusted store.
- Browse, read and compare against a second clientWhere a value or type disagrees with what another client reports, note the NodeId and the namespace URI, not the namespace index, so the comparison is meaningful across clients and sessions.
- Treat it as a cross-check, not a project standardBecause its current licensing and support position is the least certain of the mainstream clients, use it to corroborate findings rather than as the tool your commissioning procedure depends on.
What it will not do
- Windows only.
- Current availability, cost and support terms are the least clear of the mainstream clients and need vendor confirmation.
- Thinner public documentation and community knowledge than UaExpert or the open-source clients, so troubleshooting the tool itself is harder.
- A client only: no server, gateway, PubSub or packet-level capability.
- No scripting surface for automated checks.
Alternatives
| Instead of this | When |
|---|---|
| uaexpert | Better documented, more widely used and plugin-rich for the same Windows client role. |
| opcua-commander | When you need a client with no licensing question attached and no desktop. |
| prosys-opc-ua-browser | Cross-platform alternative if the workstation is not Windows. |
Verify before you rely on this: This entry is the one to check hardest before relying on it. Matrikon products moved to Honeywell and the availability, cost, download route, licence terms and supported Windows versions of the OPC UA Explorer must be confirmed with the vendor. Do not assume a free download still exists or that older documentation reflects the current product.
