Comparison
OPC UA vs Modbus
Modbus is a decades-old, dead-simple register protocol that's everywhere. OPC UA is the modern, secure, self-describing standard. Modbus wins on simplicity and cost; OPC UA wins on security, meaning and interoperability. Many plants run both, and bridge Modbus devices into an OPC UA server.
| Modbus | OPC UA | |
|---|---|---|
| Data model | Registers & coils (raw numbers/bits) | Typed, self-describing information model |
| Security | None built in | Encryption, signing, authentication |
| Discovery | None: you need a register map | Browsable address space |
| Transport | Serial (RTU) / TCP | TCP, WebSockets, MQTT |
| Footprint / cost | Tiny, cheap, universal | Heavier, richer |
| Vendor support | Near-universal on legacy gear | Broad on modern gear |
When Modbus is the right call
- Simple device-level reads/writes where a register map is enough.
- Constrained hardware, tight budgets, or lots of legacy equipment.
- You don't need security, discovery or data context at that layer.
When OPC UA is worth it
- You need security and auditability on the wire.
- You want systems to understand the data (units, types, relationships) without a hand-maintained map.
- You're integrating multiple vendors or connecting OT to IT/cloud.
You don't have to choose. A common pattern is an OPC UA server (or edge gateway) that polls Modbus devices and exposes them in a clean, secure, browsable OPC UA address space: modern access to legacy iron.
However your machines talk (Modbus, OPC UA, or both) Jemba turns the resulting data into ranked, costed actions.

Can OPC UA read Modbus devices?
Not directly, but an OPC UA server or edge gateway can poll Modbus and re-expose those points as OPC UA nodes. This "Modbus-to-OPC-UA" bridging is very common.
Is Modbus insecure?
Classic Modbus has no built-in security. It should be isolated on trusted networks. (Modbus/TCP Security exists but is rarely deployed.)
Is OPC UA slower than Modbus?
OPC UA has more overhead per connection, but for most monitoring workloads the difference is irrelevant, and subscriptions avoid constant polling.
